Resume Readiness Rules

 

Over the years, whenever I’m asked for the best job hunting strategies, I always say, the first rule of job hunting is to “have an up-to-date resume ready at all times.” Now that we have the Internet, you can share a copy of your resume in an instant. For the younger crowd, even when you’ve only had hourly positions with very little responsibilities, you still need to have a resume handy. For us seasoned workers, there’s simply no excuse. You should know better by now. Your resume must be available to share on a moment’s notice. Every time your job responsibilities shift or you’re promoted, your resume must be updated!

Lingo Lessons

The Importance of Industry-specific Terminology

My wife is largely responsible for this posting as she brought this rather interesting topic to my attention. I am grateful for her contribution as well as her devotion to me and her support for my various projects. As you will see it’s a topic that deserves your sincere consideration if you’re writing up and circulating your resume.

When you’re new to working or new to an industry you’ll encounter people who speak in lingo. Those with low social skills or high arrogance sometimes seem incapable of speaking in anything but lingo. Nonetheless, if you’re circulating your resume into areas where you’ve never ventured, you would do well to take a crash course in the basic terminology of that industry before you have to speak with anyone about employment. And perhaps before you send out your resume. It may be the case that changing a few words from your previous experiences will help recruiters and hiring managers relate better to your resume relative to the context of the job you’re applying for.
